![]() In so doing, this encryption protects this data as it is being passed from one device to another over communication channels. ![]() However, some of them like Whatsapp and Facebook Messenger have embraced end –to-end encryption. This means that an intruder equipped with appropriate remote monitoring tools can sniff the packets being transmitted and obtain the raw packets that are being relayed across the network. Most of the current instant messaging applications such as Telegram Secret Chat transmit packets in plain text. ![]() As such, the researchers propose a port-based algorithm that would scramble the data packets at the end devices, requiring the users to input decryption keys for the data to be transformed into human readable format. The results indicated that upon following the TCP stream, the instant messages were in plain text in the sending and receiving communication devices interfaces and therefore prone to eavesdropping. In this paper, a prototype instant messaging was developed and employed to investigate some of the security challenges in instant messaging applications. The rapid growth in the number of public instant messaging users has therefore created a new security concern for information technology managers. Most of the instant messaging services were never intended for secure communication in the first place. These weaknesses originate from the facts that the instant messaging clients are always on, those logs can contain sensitive information, and that the communication goes through an externally controlled server. Despite their heavy utilization, public instant messaging systems have been criticized for having a number of security weaknesses. In this application domain, the instant messaging services are employed for communicating with customers and partners, offering customer support, receiving real-time alerts, as well as management and project coordination. Moreover, the instant messaging services have also found applications in business. More and more people are enjoying the convenience and simplicity provided by the real-time messaging systems in their day-today life. These tools support any process where quick response and rapid problem solving are needed, and where faster communication than emails or telephones is useful. Use of instant messaging services is becoming increasingly popular with Internet based systems like America Online's Instant Messaging (AIM), Microsoft's MSN Messenger, Yahoo! Messenger, WhatsApp, Viber, Kakaotalk, Skype and face book instant messenger. The theory or speculations that makes up the proposed system is elaborated most in the theoretical review of this paper. Most existing product such as AOL, MSN, yahoo messenger provide their customers with a free instant messaging but over the past few years, their security has not been trusted. This paper also contains the literature review which has been categorized into historical and theoretical review. The project overview that shows the structure of the project design is depicted in introduction part of this document. The use of Encryption and decryption algorithm forms part of this project where by messages exchanged between client and server are encrypted and decrypted with a symmetric private key. The aim of the project is to develop a client server java chat application with security in mind. People of all ages log into messenger service or chat rooms to spend time chatting with known and unknown persons. Messenger services provide a perfect environment for private and personal chat. ![]() The number of users using Instant Messenger products has been increasing over recent years. Abstract Instant Messaging has become an important means of communication between people around the globe, providing an alternative to telephone and email conversations. ![]()
